Double height DDR4 does not display any significant performance deficiencies, although considering its limited compatibility and pricing, there is not really a great reason to buy it unless you need additional capacity.
Double altitude DDR4 module started making noise last year, promised to benefit both small form factor builders and whose total memory was more than 64GB (your preferred platform supports it).
According to their name, these modules double the capacity of standard DDR4 modules - up to 32GB per stick To make room for additional ICs, however, the height of the module has been increased. If you are concerned about CPU cooler withdrawal, then it is something you already want to consider.
Two new kits on its test bench - 2x32GB G.Skill TridentZ RGB DC DDR4-3200 CL14 (1.35V) and 2x32GB ZADAK Shield RGB DC DDR4-3200 CL14 (1.35V) - ASUS ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming (BIOS Version 1003) Motherboard and an Intel Core i7-8700K, are compared to a trio of 2x16GB kits.
Specifically, only three motherboards have been approved for use with double height memory: the above Strix Board, ASUS ROG Maximus IX and ASUS ROG Maximus XI Gene.
